Cultural Leadership

Since 2011, ECU commenced its inaugural Aboriginal Cultural Ambassador Initiative as a means of resourcing high-level advice on and support of Aboriginal cultural activities across the University.

Various milestones of activity are developed each year to focus action around the enhancement of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture and knowledge, with a particular focus on Noongar perspectives.

More specifically, the milestones broadly cover the following areas:

  • Community Engagement
  • Cultural guidance and presence
  • Key events and activities
  • Language and culture
  • University Engagement and Representation.

Of particular significance, cultural guidance and presence is reflected by having an Elder-in-Residence provide insights into the Noongar six seasons.

Cultural Narrative Framework

The Cultural Narrative Strategic Framework at Edith Cowan University was endorsed in 2024 to strengthen the presence of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander knowledge, culture and perspectives across the University. Guided by the leadership of Whadjuk Elders in Boorloo (Perth), the framework builds on earlier initiatives such as the Aboriginal Cultural Ambassador Initiative and the presence of Elders-in-Residence across ECU campuses.

Drawing on the cultural concept of Life Layers, developed by Richard Walley, the framework establishes five interconnected pillars—Ngarda (Subterranean), Kep (Water), Kaata (Hills), Moort Boodja (Ecosystem) and Djinda Worlal (Stars and Sky). These pillars guide collaboration, partnerships and the embedding of First Nations values across teaching, research and campus life. Together, they support two-way learning and help centre Noongar knowledge, storytelling and connection to Country within the broader cultural identity of the University.
