For many students, it’s a big commitment to start studying at a University level, no matter which University, degree or course you have in mind.

To give a taster of what a business course or degree might look like, four of Western Australia’s top public universities came together to create a week-long residential program for indigenous students.

Katitjiny Boya Birrit, National Indigenous Business Summer School (WA) or NIBSS (WA) is a joint initiative of Edith Cowan University, Curtin University, Murdoch University, and The University of Western Australia under the support of the Australian Business Deans Council.

The Katitjiny Boya Birrit program is designed to give students the opportunity to experience an immersive experience into business and business studies at a university level supported and inspired by university academics and Indigenous entrepreneurs.

Academics from all four public universities participated with facilitation by Jeremy Chetty (Co-Founder and Director of Student Edge) and expert contributions from Amanda Healy (CEO of Kirrikin), Oral McGuire (Noongar Chamber of Commerce & Industry), Karen Jacobs (Noongar Chamber of Commerce & Industry) and Kim Collard (Bibbulmun Fund).

School of Business and Law’s Gary Marchioro, ran one of the seven workshops on offer for the students.

In the final business project workshop, each group was filmed pitching their business idea or solution. This film was played at the awards ceremony and closing dinner on Thursday 23 of January at UWA.

The winning group of five students received a fully funded trip to New York City along with five accompanying mentors.

The event aims to introduce students to the world of business, create entrepreneurial skills and facilitate a ready network of contacts to support students and encourage future university studies.
