Dr Greg Willson and his children playing card games while camping indoors
Every day, two Aussie families are given the heartbreaking news that their child has cancer. Camp Quality is a not-for profit organisation who offers services and programs made specifically to help children aged 0-13 who are dealing with their diagnosis, or the diagnosis of someone they love.
School of Business and Law’s Dr Greg Willson who is Course Coordinator for Hospitality and Tourism, is engaged with many not-for profit organisations, one of them being Camp Quality. Camp Quality runs an annual ‘Camp In’ and Greg decided to get an ECU team together for 2020.
“The initial goal was to help spread a little bit of joy to the kids, and their families, diagnosed with cancer and encourage all to have some fun and take the break from cancer they urgently need. I thought, perhaps if we can raise $100 to the cause too, that would be awesome,” says Greg.
Greg was quickly blown away by the support from his colleagues. In less than a week, the ECU Campers had a team of over twenty School of Business and Law staff members, and the fundraising goal was exceeded more than nine times (currently at $911)!
“This is such a great initiative by Greg (Dr. Willson). It raises awareness for an important cause, is fun for the whole family, and doesn’t have to cost a thing. It was harder than anticipated to build the campsite but it ended up being a lot of fun and we all had a great time showing each other photos after the weekend!” says Communications Coordinator Holly Johnsen.
ECU Campers ended up at number 27 out of over 100 teams joining the campaign.
“We are very proud knowing all the funds will go to keep spreading a little bit of joy and laughter for children, and their families, who are diagnosed with cancer,” says Anna Froederberg, also from the ECU Campers team.
