Professor Matt Carnie

Matt is a Professor and Associate Dean (Regions) in the School of Engineering, based at ECU's South West campus in Bunbury. His research spans next-generation photovoltaics, self-powered IoT technologies, and printed thermoelectrics.

A first-generation graduate from a family that included engineers, steelworkers and ship builders, Matt began his research career with an industry-sponsored Engineering Doctorate (EngD) with Tata Steel. He then held research and academic roles at Swansea University, where he was appointed Professor in 2022 and co-founded and co-directed the Materials and Manufacturing Research Institute (M2RI), a community of over 150 academics and 360 postgraduate researchers across 12 departments.

Prior to arriving at ECU, Matt secured over £3M in research funding as principal investigator and contributed to more than £12M in consortium awards. He has published over 80 peer-reviewed articles in journals including Nature Reviews Clean Technology, Advanced Materials, and Advanced Energy Materials, and co-founded Reef IoT, a University start-up developing self-powered, battery-free sensors for indoor environments. He is a fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry and of the UK Higher Education Academy.

At ECU South West, Matt's priorities are twofold. He is developing engineering education in the region, working with industry and the vocational sector to build degree pathways that meet the needs of South West employers and create local opportunities for students to study and qualify close to home. Alongside this, he is growing the School of Engineering's research capacity at the Bunbury campus, forging partnerships with regional industry and connecting ECU's research strengths to the challenges facing Western Australia's regional communities.
