Data science, bioinformatics and mathematical modelling

Data drives the world we live in. Data science, including mathematical modelling, is used by almost every sector to inform decision-making processes. Using data science to investigate large-scale biological data is called bioinformatics; it is a key tool in contemporary biological research practice. In the School of Science, our researchers are using data to tackle real-world problems in biomedicine, ecological biodiversity, fisheries science, food production, and education.

Research areas include:

  • Academic integrity in mathematics education
  • Applied statistics
  • Computational biology
  • Evolutionary theory and modelling
  • Genome assembly
  • Genome Wide Association Studies (GWAS)
  • Machine learning and artificial intelligence
  • Metabolomics
  • Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) modelling
  • Population Genomic software development
  • Proteomics
  • Structural equation modelling
