The Value of a Performing Arts Education in a Changing World

Professor Linda Merrick, Principal of the Royal Northern College of Music, delivered the 2017 ECU Vice-Chancellor’s Distinguished Oration.

Professor Merrick outlined how - in an uncertain world - performing arts matters now more than ever before, and how the discipline continues to offer many political, economic, social, educational and personal benefits. She also discussed the conflict between artistic integrity and the economic realities of today.

From the rapid rise of social media and the major changes in how young people access music to the exponential growth in TV talent shows, Professor Merrick explored the conflict between artistic integrity and the economic realities of today.

Reflecting on what the future may hold she explained how higher education can respond to the challenges of an increasingly global, virtual and media driven world.
