Dr Esme Franken
Dr Esme Franken’s PhD looked at how managers could develop resilience in their employees. She utilised a mixed method approach, with a total of five phases of research inquiry. Esme’s PhD work extends the literature on resilience in the workplace and investigates how such capability can be advanced by managers.
Esme’s thesis recently won the Leadership and Organization Development category of the Emerald/EFMD ODRA awards. Entries were judged by the Editor and at least one Editorial Advisory Board member of the journal. Entries were judged across criteria such as significance/implications for theory and practice and originality and innovation.
Esme’s work stimulates academic discussion of resilience as a developable capability, and the role of managers in its development. Esme’s research has also had a practical impact on organisations. She has presented to HR departments, to public sector managers, and to research participants.
Esme would like to express her special thanks to her supervisors in this piece: Dr Geoff Plimmer (Victoria Uni of Wellington (VUW)), A/Prof Sanna Malinen (University of Canterbury) and Associate Professor Jane Bryson (VUW).
Congratulations Esme!
