Dr Edmund Goh has secured a New Student Engagement and Support Grant from StudyPerth for his proposal; “Integrating university hospitality international students into the workforce, local community, and business through applied learning working experience in hotels”.

The $10,000 grant will be utilised to increase international hospitality students’ employment opportunities in hospitality. This initiative is made possible through the support of Lotterywest, the WA Government and StudyPerth

This is a timely initiative to address the current hospitality industry workforce shortage. As the economy emerges from a pandemic lockdown, hospitality companies are facing recruitment difficulties to boost their workforce after losing most of their casual staff during the peak of the pandemic; and functioned at reduced capacity with strict social distancing guidelines.

Ensuring businesses can access skilled workers is vitally important for the recovery of the economy and the long-term survival of the hospitality sector.

ECU will partner with Joondalup Resort to offer 30 ECU international hospitality students an applied learning opportunity for two weeks (21st June – 2nd July 2021) to work at Joondalup Resort. The key objective is to increase employability readiness and provide university hospitality international students with an applied working experience.

General Manager, Joondalup Resort, Justin Peters said this will help prepare students for the workforce.

“This is an authentic applied learning experience involving hotel day-to-day operations that help better prepare our future hospitality workforce.”

All training expenses will be covered by the grant, including meals, uniforms, and venue hire. During this period, students will work across key hotel departments (Front Office, Housekeeping, and Food & Beverage) to gain in-depth knowledge about hotel operations. Students will work closely with the respective department heads and will be paired with a hotel employee buddy for the two weeks.

At the end of the applied learning, students will plan, manage and execute a dinner operation for 35-50 guests as a closing ceremony to showcase their learning at Joondalup Resort.

If you are an international student enrolled in a hospitality program at ECU, passionate about hospitality, and interested in gaining some work experience during the semester break, please send the following to Dr Edmund Goh (e.goh@ecu.edu.au) by 5pm, 1 June 2021:

  • A resume,
  • a 300-word statement as to why you should be selected for this learning experience, why are you passionate about working in hospitality, and what do you expect to learn out of this experience.

Please note that this learning experience is only limited to 30 international students.
