How do we build better businesses and stronger communities in a shifting global landscape? In October, sustainability researchers from Edith Cowan University School of Business and Law and Massey University came together to explore exactly that.

The Centre for Sustainability and Governance Research (CSGR) at ECU partnered with the Massey Business School Sustainability Hub for a joint research symposium bringing fresh insight to the world of corporate governance, climate responsibility, and ethical business practices.

In opening remarks, Professor Gabriel Eweje, Director of CSGR, spoke about the power of genuine knowledge exchange. When experts across business, governance, law, and sustainability share what they are discovering, they accelerate progress.

“Collaboration across borders helps us lead not only in our regions but internationally. Together we can shape better business, smarter policy, and stronger communities,” he said.

The message was echoed in the closing remarks from Professor Nitha Palakshappa, Director of the Massey Business School Sustainability Hub, who highlighted the urgent need for research partnerships that address complex issues head-on and deliver real-world impact.

Research that sparks action

Throughout the symposium, presenters from both universities shared cutting-edge research tackling some of the biggest sustainability and governance challenges of our time, including:

  • How board expertise shapes strategic decision-making
  • Climate disasters and the race for renewable energy innovation
  • Net-zero transitions and the evolving role of corporate governance
  • Modern slavery, labour exploitation, and ethical supply chains
  • Corporate care models supporting workers balancing employment and eldercare
  • CSR strategies for achieving the UN Sustainable Development Goals
  • Industry 4.0 technologies driving sustainable manufacturing

A shared commitment to impact

The contributions from the organising teams of both ECU and Massey demonstrate what happens when great ideas move across borders: innovation grows, solutions strengthen, and communities benefit.

The CSGR looks forward to future opportunities to collaborate and continue advancing sustainability and governance research that makes a difference.
