The Edith Cowan University School of Business and Law recently welcomed the Hon. Julienne Penny, former Family Court of Western Australia Judge and a true pioneer of the state's legal landscape, for an inspiring tour of the City Campus and its modern law facilities.

Beyond sharing the wisdom of her decades-long career, Ms Penny left behind a remarkable surprise: the very gown, jacket, and jabot she wore on the bench.

A Gift to Inspire the Next Generation

These historic garments have found a permanent home in ECU’s Moot Court, bridging the gap between theory and tradition. This remarkable addition turns abstract legal history into a tangible source of inspiration for every student studying law at ECU.

During her visit, Ms Penny shared reflections on her time in legal practice and on the bench. Her message was clear: a great career is built on professionalism, deep integrity, and a commitment to serving the legal community.

A Career Built on Integrity and Change

Ms Penny built a remarkable legal career over several decades. In 1999, she was appointed as a Judge of the Family Court of Western Australia. Before becoming a judge, she worked as a lawyer specialising in family, welfare, and criminal law. She also spent years improving the culture of the legal system, serving on the Chief Justice's Task Force on Gender Bias and the Legal Practice Board Disciplinary Tribunal.

This is Just the Beginning

Ms Penny is already planning her next visit to ECU. She has expressed a keen interest in coming back to campus to engage with students and staff.

The School of Business and Law extends its warmest thanks to Ms Penny for her generosity, her stories, and her ongoing support. Her legacy will continue to shape and inspire ECU lawyers for generations to come.
