In this project, ECU, as lead research organisation, will build on its expertise in cyber security, computer science and digital citizenship to address two important topics of priority interest identified by Defence:

  1. Emerging trends in Homeland Security (especially in cyber, critical infrastructure, and unmanned and autonomous systems).
  2. Opportunities / challenges posed by disruptive and converging technologies.

In particular, the research will focus on disruptive and converging technologies of cyber, IoT / IoBT, artificial intelligence (AI) and autonomous systems to the mission, design, structure and operations of Defence and the Australian Defence Force (ADF) . In so doing, it will also help address Defence’s strategies by understanding the potential trends in sustaining military-technological advantage in this new era of great power competition, especially in the Indo-Pacific region. The project will use Horizon Scanning, an analytic method for future-oriented thinking about Australia‘s national security challenges, to conduct deep-dive investigations of opportunities and challenges posed by disruptive and converging technologies.
