Michelle is the Strategic Business Manager with the Food Environments Team, Nutrition and Health Innovation Institute, School of Health and Medical Sciences.
She is providing strategic advice for the Australian Food Atlas project within the research theme of Community Food Environment.
Michelle Broom is a dietitian and leader in the food and nutrition sectors, with over 12 years of experience in the food industry dedicated to nutrition communications, strategic management and public policy advocacy.
Michelle has been the executive leader of two industry associations, the Grains and Legumes Nutrition Council in Australia and the Ontario Produce Marketing Association in Canada driving organizational strategy, fostering relationships and advocating for evidence-based change.
In the grain manufacturing sector, Michelle has provided nutrition expertise to new product development teams and marketing departments as well as developed evidence-based portfolios to substantiate food and health claims. She also led the development of evidence-based advocacy positions for submissions to the Australian Department of Health and government agencies. Michelle established and managed an industry Code of Practice for whole grain content claims on packaging. This stands today as a guide for industry in the absence of government regulations.
Michelle has held advisory roles on committees for the Australian Department of Health, Dietitians Australian and Hort Innovation.
Prior to her career in nutrition, Michelle spent time teaching English in Japan as part of the Japan Exchange Teaching Program and Chemistry in Australia and England.
Michelle’s research has focussed on the health benefits of grain foods and legumes, tracking of nutrient profile of grain foods on shelf as well as consumer attitudes and behaviours related to specific food groups.
Michelle’s research interests include food environments, dietary patterns and brain health, food policy and food insecurity.
