Risk Management Training for West Australian Industry

How to provide risk management training for your organisation and clients

Edith Cowan University has taught and conducted research in Occupational Health and Safety, and Occupational Hygiene for around 20 years.

We are proud our degree courses are externally accredited, and our teaching consistently receives 5-star feedback from students.

Over the last 5 years we have developed an excellent understanding of the issues associated with implementing the new Work Health and Safety legislation, by engaging with industry and research at events such as the Government Mines Safety Roadshows, Australasian Oil and Gas exhibition, Chamber of Minerals and Energy, and AIHS Perth Safety Symposium

We have designed a risk management program comprising targeted learning materials, at 5 organisational levels, which can be delivered in the classroom by a presenter, or, self-paced on-line via our Canvas learning management system.  These courses are designed to educate specific workers and duty holders in their risk management duties, for example to encourage worker consultation in Health and Safety Committees, the Statutory Appointments in the Mines Regulations, and Company Officers in their requirements for verification of risk management effectiveness

The classroom materials aim to be flexible, enabling training organisations or departments to insert specific risk management procedures and tools into our training materials, allowing you to provide participants a contemporary approach to risk management, without having to change the way you work.

This is an outstanding opportunity to partner with ECU to provide your clients with a learning pathway, from these short courses into ECU degree courses.

Short courses

There are five short courses available, one general course and 4 which are mapped to an appropriate National Unit of Competency.  Each course includes learning materials for approximately 2 days of training, plus assessments. The courses are:

  • General: A user friendly introduction suitable for all workers, as they must understand risk and risk management, and why features in the legislation such as consultation are important. With an emphasis on watching and listening, using cartoons and practical exercises this short course is an essential induction style course, to create a common language of risk management.
  • Assessor: An AQF level 3 course suitable for any worker who needs to conduct risk assessments and suggest improvements, such as workers in a small team, team leaders, Health and Safety Representatives or Safety Officers.
  • Advisor: An AQF level 4 course suitable for workers involved in the development of risk management performance, such as a Safety Advisor or Team Leader.
  • Systems: An AQF level 5 course suitable for workers who contribute to the development and implementation of the risk management system, for example Safety Advisors, Safety Coordinators and Managers.
  • Leader: An AQF level 6 course designed for workers who are responsible for the continuous improvement of risk management in their organisation, for example by monitoring and auditing. This course is suitable for Safety Managers, Operational Leaders and Senior Site Executives.

Available to coincide with the launch of the new Work Health and Safety legislation in early 2022 , ECU will licence these courses to training organisations and departments.  The licence will provide you with the mapping to Units of Competency, facilitators guidance materials, assessment materials, and classroom schedules.  Our value for money licence fee and per-participant fee with volume discounts provide an excellent business opportunity to partner with ECU.

Our aim is to provide you with the resources you need to train your teams in what they need to know about risk management, in a targeted and enterprise-wide program.
