HEAPPs WA Co-Convener Dr Ashley Morgan (ECU) and Secretary Mr Andrew Duirs (ECU).
On Friday 16 July, ECU held WA’s first Higher Education Pride Practitioners (HEAPPs) network event at Spectrum Gallery, since forming in early 2021.
HEAPPs is a network for higher education staff members supporting lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex, queer/ questioning, and asexual (LGBTIQA+) employees in WA institutions to share best practice, collaborate, and facilitate cross-institutional dialogue on LGBTIQA+ matters in the higher education sector.
Co-conveners Dr Ashlee Morgan (Lecturer, SBL), Mx Stevie Lane (Equity Projects Officer, Equity and Indigenous) and secretary Mr Andrew Duirs (Counsellor, Student Life) are all passionate about LGBTIQA+ issues and supporting ECU students and staff to feel welcome and celebrated.
“ECU is excited to be leading the WA Chapter and provide a space for higher education staff to connect, learn and further LGBTIQA+ equity, diversity and inclusion initiatives,” said Mx Lane.
“This is a fantastic opportunity to build on the great LGBTIQA+ inclusion work being done in the higher education sector in WA and throughout Australia, and further embed it into our teaching, learning and workplace practices,” Dr Morgan added.
The event brought together over 40 professionals from higher education institutions in WA including ECU, Curtin, UWA and Murdoch.
The national HEAPPs Network was founded by Pride Network chairs and diversity and inclusion staff from across the NSW/ACT Higher Education sector in 2019.
ECU staff (academic and professional) are encouraged to get involved in the Network through joining the Teams channel and following the LinkedIn page.
