Many ECU staff got involved in Wear It Purple Day (WIPD) festivities this year in support of LGBTIQA+ young people.
Vice-Chancellor Professor Steve Chapman CBE said he appreciated the hard work and enthusiasm that went into this year’s events and initiatives.
“I feel very fortunate to be working alongside staff who are so passionate about LGBTIQA+ diversity and inclusion,” he said.
“I look forward to future celebrations and further embedding this into all that we do at ECU.”
A total of $1,525 was raised for LGBTIQA+ youth space Freedom Centre through ECU’s WIPD fundraiser. The money will go towards supporting young LGBTIQA+ people to stay socially connected.
On Wednesday, 25 August, ECU held a Wear It Purple panel event focusing on LGBTIQA+ inclusion in education.
There were some great discussions and a diverse range of people in attendance including school principals, school psychologists, high school and primary school teachers, and university staff. The presentation and panel discussion can be viewed here.
On the day, more than 15 ECU staff teams held a celebration to start the conversation about supporting LGBTIQA+ young people. The winners of the staff photo competition include the Medical and Health Sciences Team (Joondalup), the Student Life Team (Mount Lawley) and the Dean’s Office (South West) who have all won a prize pack of rainbow goodies. ECU students from the Queer Collective spent the day at their WIPD themed Queer Beers catch up, and the night taking part in the ECU Guild Equity fashion show.
