Dr Fiona Navin, Director Access and Equity, and Arshad Omari, Senior Deputy Vice Chancellor, with our Student Equity Advisers.
To celebrate thirty years of International Day of Persons with Disabilities, we hosted an event with the theme ‘Transformative solutions for inclusive development: the role of innovation in fuelling an accessible and equitable world’, showcasing the work and voices of students with lived experience of disability and accessible learning in a digital environment at ECU.
Our student speakers are currently employed as Student Equity Advisers. Over the last few months they have been involved in a co-design project with the Equity Projects Team, creating a video and providing input to a staff micro-credential focused on how we can improve digital access across ECU.
At the event, we launched the video, and heard from our students about their own experiences of accessible and inaccessible learning, and how we as a university can better support all students in their learning.
This commitment to better understanding and supporting inclusion of people with disability increases our disability confidence – which, in part, is understood through the Australian Network on Disability Access and Inclusion Index - a Key Performance Indicator within the ECU Strategic Plan.
Keep an eye out for the staff micro-credential, developed by the Centre for Learning and Teaching, in the new year.
