Prevention and Response to Gender-based Violence

At Edith Cowan University, we want everyone in our community to feel safe, respected and supported.

Our Gender-based Violence Prevention and Response Plan outlines how we’re working to prevent gender-based violence and support people who have been impacted.

The Plan focuses on the following five key areas

  • Leadership and governance
  • Awareness raising and community engagement
  • Life on campus
  • Training and education
  • Response and support

The Plan aligns with national recommendations and best practice guidelines, and reflects the feedback and experiences of our students and staff.

Gender equity

Gender-based violence is rooted in gender inequality and discrimination. When there are unequal power dynamics between genders in our institutions, workplaces, and communities, it creates conditions where violence can occur and persist.

Gender equity is fundamental to preventing gender-based violence. This means:

  • Challenging harmful gender stereotypes and norms
  • Promoting equal representation and participation in leadership and decision-making
  • Addressing systemic barriers that perpetuate inequality
  • Fostering respect for people of all genders

By actively working toward gender equity across all aspects of university life, we create a foundation for a safer, more inclusive community for everyone.
