The ECU SBL Law Discipline Preliminary Moot

Advocacy is a skill that courtroom lawyers need to acquire and mooting introduce them to those skills. Mooting also helps one to develop the mental skills and resilience needed in legal practice.

As a first step towards the acquisition of these skills, the Edith Cowan Student Law Society organises an annual Introductory Moot, primarily for first year law students with no prior experience of advocacy. It is typically held in the first semester, with no prior knowledge of any black letter doctrine required.

In the past, winners have enrolled in the mooting elective offered by the discipline in which they are graded on their performance in national and international mooting competitions. Those selected performed with great distinction in 2020 and 2021, achieving outstanding outcomes against some of the best known law schools in the country.

This year, the winner is Davina Harrington, first-year law student, seen here being presented with her certificate on 20 May 2022 by Assoc Prof. Josh Aston, Associate Dean Law, to commemorate her success. Davina was a worthy winner, beating off stiff competition and now joins the ranks of those who will compete in national and international competitions shortly.

Congratulations Davina. And many thanks to Elena Lucassen, President of the ECU Student Law Society, Kavishka Silva, Competitions officer of the society, and Stuart Caporn, whose hard work and initiative were the genesis for the competition and which has provided the impetus for much of the success in mooting.
