Dr Phillip Matson

Dr Phill Matson has extensive experience and expertise in reproductive technology with a particular focus on andrology, endocrinology, and procedures using patient and donor gametes and embryos. He has been the Scientific Director in fertility clinics both in the UK and Australia, and is currently the Principal Scientist at Fertility North here in Western Australia. While in the UK, he became the first Consultant Clinical Scientist with full IVF responsibility in the National Health Service, being formally equivalent to a medical specialist. In addition to his work as a clinical scientist, he helped establish the Reproductive Biology Unit at Perth Zoo.

Phillwas the inaugural Chair of the Association of Clinical Embryologists (ACE) and was recently accepted as a Fellow of the Royal College of Pathology in the Specialty of Clinical Embryology. In the UK he was instrumental in establishing the world’s first External Quality Assurance Program for andrology and later helped create the External Quality Assurance Schemes for Reproductive Medicine in Australia. He has served on the committees of various professional bodies including the British Andrology Society, British Fertility Society, Fertility Society of Australia, Scientists in Reproductive Technology (SIRT), the Endocrine and Reproductive Biology Society of WA and the NHMRC Embryo Research Licensing Committee. He is currently the Chair of the Reproductive Technology Accreditation Committee (RTAC).

Throughout his career, Phill has undertaken research as part of supervisory duties inservice-orientated laboratories and published over 100 papers in refereed journals.
