One of Edith Cowan University’s (ECU) distinguished Council members is among the nine ECU alumni and current and former staff members recognised in the 2020 Queen’s Birthday Honours List, announced 8 June 2020. The Honours List recognises outstanding Australians who have made a significant contribution to their community and to Australia domestically or globally.

Ms Denise Goldsworthy AO, a current serving member of the ECU Council, was one of only 68 Western Australians to be recognised in the Honours List for distinguished service to business, particularly for her service to technological innovation and research in the mining and manufacturing sectors.

Ms Goldsworthy began her career at BHP Steel Newcastle working in the male dominated mining sector. Since that time, she has built a successful career while resisting those who saw mining as a non-traditional role for a woman, and now has over 35 years’ experience across the resources sector. As a result of her successful career with Rio Tinto and BHP Steel, Ms Goldsworthy honed her management skills from her leadership roles in both operations and technology. She worked in a variety of roles across her career, including 17 years spent at BHP Steel; as an executive for Rio Tinto for 15 years, including as Chief Commercial Officer - Autonomous Haul Trucks; Managing Director of Dampier Salt and Managing Director HIsmelt and Director of Major Projects.

Ms Goldsworthy is the Founder and Managing Principal of Alternate Futures, which she established in October 2013, and also a non-executive director and advisor on research, technology and innovation. Ms Goldsworthy is a Non-executive Director on the board of Western Power, a member of the Cooperative Research Centre Advisory Committee (CRCAC) and since 2013 Ms Goldsworthy has served as a Non-executive Chair at ChemCentre, which reports to the Honourable Dave Kelly MLA, Minister for Science. Her career achievements and leadership qualities are an inspiration for women across the State to work hard and be motivated to achieve their desired careers in the science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) sectors.

Through dedication to her work in the mining and manufacturing industries, Ms Goldsworthy has seen tangible results. In 2010 she was named the Telstra Australian Business Woman of the Year. Following this, she was inducted into the WA Women’s Hall of Fame in 2011. She is also a member of Chief Executive Women (CEW), a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Technological Science and Engineering, and a graduate of the Australian Institute of Company Directors.

Ms Goldsworthy is a role model for women in STEM and demonstrates how women can succeed and thrive at the highest levels of business and industry. ECU is proud to have Ms Goldsworthy as part of the University community.
