Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Strategic Partnerships), Professor Cobie Rudd from Edith Cowan University (ECU) was a guest speaker at the Women in the Humanities workshop held 22 July 2019. The event hosted by the Australian Academy of Humanities and supported by the Australian Research Council (ARC), is a foundational component of the Future Humanities Workforce study, which looks to provide a new and comprehensive account of Australia’s humanities research workforce and its future sustainability.
The Women in the Humanities workshop aimed to address a key project question – “How gender inequity affects the health and capability of the humanities academic workforce?” The workshop further explored various institutional strategies for gender equity and workforce diversity, along with professional development and career pathways for postgraduates and early-career researchers.
Professor Rudd provided her perspective on diversity and gender equality in the higher education sector; speaking to facts surrounding a leadership gap and corresponding pay gap in the social sciences, as well as gender inequity limiting the career satisfaction and progression of women.
Professor Rudd highlighted the importance of strong visible leadership with the need for ongoing communication strategies that allowed leadership to hear the issues, as well as the need for environmental and attitudinal changes to counteract inequities. Professor Rudd flagged the challenge faced by Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences (HASS) disciplines, with respect to the 2018 shift of emphasis of Federal research funding from HASS to engineering and medical disciplines.
Insights from the workshop will inform a final project report composed by the Australian Academy of Humanities and ultimately contribute to the development of a strategic planning agenda for the humanities. Further information about the Future Humanities Workforce project can be found here.
