The CAIML team also includes Higher Degree by Research (HDR) students focusing on projects aligned to the Centre’s research priorities, contributing to innovative solutions and real-world applications in AI and machine learning.

Associate Professor Martin Masek


Centre Lead

Associate Professor Martin Masek completed a PhD in Medical Image Processing and specialises in artificial intelligence, computer vision and image analysis. His research develops AI-driven solutions for healthcare, education and defence, supporting organisations such as hospitals, government agencies and industry partners.

Professor David Suter


Deputy Lead

Professor David Suter holds a PhD in Computer Vision and is internationally recognised for his expertise in computer vision, machine learning and statistical modelling. His research develops advanced methods for analysing visual data, contributing to innovations across artificial intelligence and real-world decision-making.
Dr Jumana Abu-Khalaf

Dr. Jumana Abu-Khalaf


Deputy Lead

Dr Jumana Abu-Khalaf holds a PhD in Mechanical Engineering specialising in Robotics and Control. Her research focuses on artificial intelligence, robotics and wearable sensing technologies, applying machine learning approaches to improve healthcare outcomes and better understand human movement and interaction.

Dr Joseph Barnby specialises in computational neuroscience, psychiatry and interpretable artificial intelligence. His research uses computational modelling to investigate social cognition, decision-making and mental health, helping to develop more transparent and effective AI solutions for healthcare and human behaviour.
Dr Zulqarnian Gilani

Dr Syed Zulqarnain Gilani

Dr Syed Zulqarnain Gilani specialises in explainable artificial intelligence, medical imaging and computer vision. His research develops AI technologies for disease detection and diagnosis, including applications in autism, sleep apnoea and cardiovascular health, supporting improved healthcare outcomes.

Dr Syed Mohammed Shamsul Islam

Dr Syed Mohammed Shamsul Islam obtained his PhD from The University of Western Australia and specialises in artificial intelligence for healthcare. His research develops diagnostic and decision-support technologies for conditions including sleep apnoea, dementia and infectious diseases, enhancing clinical care and patient outcomes.

Dr Johnny Lo is an applied statistician specialising in advanced data analytics and statistical modelling. His research extracts meaningful insights from large and complex datasets across health and biomedical sciences, supporting evidence-based decisions in areas such as nutrition, disease prevention and public health.
Dr Syed Afaq Ali Shah

Dr Syed Afaq Ali Shah specialises in computer vision, deep learning and artificial intelligence. Before entering academia, he spent seven years in the aviation industry in engineering and project management roles. His research focuses on image analysis, biometrics and healthcare applications of AI.

Dr Viet Huynh specialises in machine learning, probabilistic modelling and artificial intelligence. Following his PhD at Deakin University, he established a strong publication record in leading AI conferences. His research focuses on scalable learning algorithms, causal AI and healthcare applications.

Dr Kun Hu

Dr Kun Hu specialises in artificial intelligence, machine learning and multimedia analysis. Since completing his PhD at the University of Sydney, he has published extensively in leading AI venues, received multiple best paper awards and contributed to major international conferences and editorial boards.

Dr Abdul Basit

Dr Abdul Basit


Member

Abdul Ahmad holds a PhD in Computer Science from Rutgers University and is a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at ECU’s Centre for Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning. His research applies combinatorial geometric methods to computer vision, improving the accuracy, robustness and reliability of AI-powered image analysis.
