On 19 March 2020, an independent review of the Athena SWAN Charter in the UK – ‘The Future of Athena SWAN’ was published. This review was produced by an Athena SWAN Charter Independent Review Steering Group and led by Professor Julia Buckingham CBE, Vice-Chancellor and President of Brunel University London.
The Steering Group’s detailed recommendations support that Athena SWAN will still be a major driver of gender equality practice in the UK higher education sector. The Steering Group reaffirmed the positive and significant impact that the Athena SWAN Charter has had in the UK, thus, demonstrating how the Science in Australia Gender Equity (SAGE) Athena SWAN Charter in Australia can benefit from the experiences of UK institutions.
The report highlighted 12 overall areas of focus with key themes including about scope, reducing the administrative burden, demonstrating impact and enabling ready access to mandatory data.
The Steering Group recognised that the Athena SWAN Charter has been adopted by a number of other countries and recommendations showed consideration for the enhancement of the Charter in those countries.
