On Thursday, 6 August 2020, ECU’s Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Strategic Partnerships), Professor Cobie Rudd presented via webinar at the 5th Science in Australia Gender Equity (SAGE) Ltd. webinar, as part of the new SAGE webinar series seeking to stimulate discussion about gender equality and highlight best practice in the higher education and research sectors. Professor Rudd’s presentation, entitled ‘Evaluation and monitoring of institutional gender equality indicators’,  was delivered for participants from across Australian universities and research institutes.

SAGE is a not-for-profit public company limited by guarantee, founded by the Australian Academy of Science and the Australian Academy of Technology and Engineering. SAGE is the only gender equity and diversity program of its kind in Australia and collaborates with higher education and research institutes to achieve meaningful systemic and cultural change within organisations through the use of their Athena SWAN model for Australia.

SAGE requested ECU share their experiences with the evaluation of gender equality indicators and demonstrate how these indicators are embedded in ECU’s processes and practices. Professor Rudd discussed how effective evaluation and monitoring is championed through our Athena SWAN Data Dashboard and our Athena SWAN Action Plan Tracking Dashboard. The Athena SWAN Data dashboard was created in Tableau data analytics software system and is a range of visual worksheets for leaders and managers to directly view gender equality indicators. This Data Dashboard currently has 15 metrics across 22 pages and 90 separate charts/tables make up the current release of the Dashboard.

As well, the Action Plan Tracking Dashboard is a streamlined tracking method, broken down into ECU’s Athena SWAN Bronze Institutional Action Plan themes and individual actions, that allows us to effectively monitor and track progress against our Action Plan at a high-level. There is traffic light status monitoring, trend data and completion data making it simpler for a Senior Leader who is a Lead Action owner, to monitor and report on their progress. The dashboard allows everyone involved with the action to know if we are completing everything we think is necessary to achieve our goals, or if not, what strategies should we employ to progress these actions.
