ECU was invited to present at the international ‘Diversity Interventions 2022 Conference: Towards a Science and Profession of Athena Swan’ on the 7th of April 2022. The conference, held virtually and in-person in the UK, focused on ‘Implementing interventions and action plans in different settings’. Hosted by Advance HE in partnership Oxford University and Science in Australia Gender Equity Ltd (SAGE), ECU represented Australia on a panel which featured key gender equality and diversity leaders from Ireland, the UK, the USA and Canada.

Program Manager – Athena Swan, Jenna Ardagh, discussed ECU’s experiences and journey to date in achieving an Athena Swan Institutional Bronze Accreditation Award in 2018 and the subsequent implementation of a four year whole-of-university targeted Action Plan. In transitioning from the Bronze Award onto the current pathway to Silver Accreditation Award status, Jenna provided an overview of SAGE’s Cygnet Award process – a prerequisite which enables ECU to qualify to apply for an Athena Swan Institutional Silver Accreditation Award.

Jenna was able to draw on the University’s learnings over the last six years in developing and providing a coordinated approach to monitoring and evaluating gender equality. In the spirt of sharing knowledge, Jenna described to the audience how ECU had worked to improve the culture of the University through targeted strategies for achieving gender equality. This included the showcasing of ECU’s Athena Swan Data Dashboard, Athena Swan Bronze Tracking Dashboard and Cygnet Status Update Dashboard.

Jenna was joined by representatives from a diverse range of institutions including Mohawk College, The Institute of Cancer Research, The University of Limerick, The University of Manchester and The American Association for the Advancement of Science. The presentation concluded with a Q&A component whereby the audience has an opportunity to ask questions of each of the presenters.
