On Thursday, 26 May 2022, ECU’s Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Regional Futures) and Vice-President, Professor Cobie Rudd presented at the Engaging Education’s Future Female Leaders Program event. Held at Edith Cowan University (ECU), a STEM Women Panel feature formed a key part of the day’s proceedings.

The Future Female Leaders Program is a blended-learning program for young women aged between 16-18. Leadership skills, social consciousness, and empowerment are achieved through a 6-month blended learning program including face-to-face workshops, webinars, self-paced tutorials, professional mentoring, a STEM panel, and group coaching.

Women continue to be underrepresented in the fields of Science Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM), and ECU is seeking to address this inequity through supporting initiatives such as these. ECU is a member of Science in Australia Gender Equity Limited (SAGE) and the Athena Swan Charter in Australia, and strives to embed genuine and sustainable gender equity, diversity and inclusion within our community.

ECU hosted the program’s second 2022 in-person workshop which included the STEM Women Panel event as well as professional mentoring opportunities. Professor Rudd spoke to the girls about her experiences as both a leader and a woman in STEM and the Panel provided advice on navigating ways to break down the very real barriers facing women in technology, sharing their career journeys (Panel members included: Aimee Robinson from Dilate Digital, Jessica Morrison from IGO Ltd, Danielle Scotland from Western Power, and Sasha Johnson from Women in Technology WA Inc. (WiTWA)). A workshop on ‘Communication and Collaboration’ was provided by Claire Seeber from Eating your Cake too, a business skills training initiative with a focus on accelerating the career growth of women globally.
