Concept designs for new teaching and learning spaces for the School of Education, with Building 8 reopening in Semester 2 2026.
Semester Two marks a significant milestone for the School of Education, with the completion of new and upgraded teaching and learning spaces designed to reflect contemporary educational practice. These developments respond to a central priority: strengthening the connection between theory and practice so graduates are better prepared for today’s diverse classroom environments.
The new science laboratories promote inquiry-based, hands-on learning, enabling students to engage directly with experiments and approaches they will later facilitate in schools. The refurbished theatre, complemented by a dedicated green room and enhanced front-of-house areas, expands opportunities for performance, presentation, and whole-cohort engagement.
A key addition is the on-campus food technologies kitchen, addressing a long-standing gap in facilities. This purpose-built space provides students with the opportunity to develop practical teaching skills in a realistic environment aligned with curriculum delivery requirements.
Creative disciplines have also been enhanced through the introduction of specialised art studios for ceramics and printmaking, along with a display gallery that supports critique, reflection, and exhibition. Music education benefits from two purpose-designed spaces that open onto a shared courtyard, enabling flexible teaching, rehearsal, and recording.
Of particular importance is the introduction of simulated learning environments. Newly designed primary pedagogy and early childhood spaces replicate authentic classroom settings, giving students structured opportunities to practise teaching strategies, test approaches, and build confidence before professional placements. These environments support a more deliberate and scaffolded pathway to classroom readiness.
Further additions include a media studies room and the STELLAR Studio, an immersive virtual reality space supporting podcasting and simulation development. These facilities recognise the growing importance of digital capability, communication, and multimodal storytelling in education.
While the transition has required adaptability from staff and students, the investment in these facilities positions the School strongly. We look forward to sharing these spaces with partners and strengthening engagement with the broader education sector.
