Read and Publish Agreements are proving to be a positive approach to supporting research publication.

In January 2022 we reported that industry body Council of Australian University Librarians (CAUL) had successfully negotiated Read & Publish Agreements with numerous vendors, and that ECU had partnered with six major vendors.

Since announcing the Agreements ECU researchers have been successful with the Open Access publication of 30 articles. Wavier of the Article Processing Charge on these articles has resulted in a saving of $132,000 to date. This is a fantastic outcome for our research community and represents a strong return on investment for the University.

Earlier this year Associate Professor Vicki Banham and her PhD student were the first ECU staff approved under the new Read and Publish Agreements, waiving their Article Processing Charges of approximately $4,000. The article titled ‘Health promotion in an Australian Aboriginal community: The Growing Strong Brains Toolkit®’ is published as Open Access in the Q1 Journal - Primary Health Care Research & Development.

Publication opportunities

Publication opportunities under the new Agreements are available for the remainder of 2022 with nominated journal titles in:

  • Cambridge
  • CSIRO
  • Oxford
  • Springer
  • Wiley
  • The Company of Biologists

Interested researchers should note that some publishers have offered capped allowances. Researchers from all participating institutions are eligible to apply, with their participation impacting the allowances.
