Earlier this year Library commenced the final phase of its equipment upgrade project.

Libraries and their staff rely on specialist equipment to support the loan and safe keeping of collection items. The upgrade has made it easier and more convenient for our users to access, loan and return physical Library items.

A lot of work occurred behind the scenes to source state-of-the-art equipment and configure it to the needs of our patrons. Technicians worked with the project team and Library staff over a period of months to perfect elements of design, positioning, and functionality.

Recently, the equipment install and implementation were successfully finalised! We’ve been happy to see users seamlessly transitioning to the updated hardware and technology.

Read on to learn about the great, new and improved features across your Campus Libraries.

Upgraded after-hours return chutes

The chutes can be accessed 24/7 at each Campus Library.

All that’s required is to scan your book against the built-in RFID scanner to open the chute, and then drop in your book to have it marked returned off your record within a matter of minutes.

You can use these at any time, including after Library closing hours.

Please note dongles, laptops, and oversized items cannot be returned using the after-hours chutes.

Upgraded ‘smart return’ shelves

Apart from looking very stylish with their sleek black finish, smart shelves manage the return of items digitally for you.

Hot tip: Be sure to place all items vertically to ensure they're recognised by the scanning software.

You can return books, CDs, DVDs and music scores using the smart shelves during staffed hours. The term ‘returned’ will pop up on the return shelf screen. You’ll see they’ve been marked returned in your Library account (My Account).

Please note dongles, laptops, and oversized items that do not fit in the shelves cannot be returned using the smart shelves.

The lowest shelves are at ground level, ensuring they’re accessible to all patrons including those who may have height restrictions.

  • Joondalup: operational from 8:00am-8:00pm
  • Mount Lawley and South West: operational during Library opening hours
