Scholarly literature on GenAI tools in teaching, learning, research and policy is expanding, with careful thought required to identify risks and capitalise on opportunities.

Mastering the productive and appropriate use of generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) tools will soon be vital for both academic and professional success. ECU has staff from numerous schools and service centres guiding the integration of GenAI into learning, teaching, student support, research and research training.

ECU’s Librarian team, together with Centre for Learning and Teaching, have been busy investigating GenAI; in particular, the introduction of ChatGPT as a popular tool in a university setting.

We’ve taken a proactive approach to guide our students towards understanding how to successfully integrate tools like ChatGPT into academic life, through the development of online resources, workshop offerings and embedding knowledge in curriculum.

Some areas we encourage students to consider and explore include:

  • risks and ethics of GenAI for lifelong learning and for ECU studies
  • non-text AI
  • prompt engineering
  • incorporating GenAI into the assignment process
  • acknowledging use of GenAI and academic integrity

Generative AI and ChatGPT Library Guide

A new Generative AI and ChatGPT Library Guide has just been launched. It’s focussed on using GenAI in an academic setting, for guidance on your GenAI journey.

Other support resources for students

This content helps you explore how to think critically about the quality and integrity of AI outputs.

  • ChatGPT and Generative AI Tools (workshop)

Students can attend a 90-minute interactive online workshop examining some of the basic functionality of ChatGPT and related tools. The session opens up a conversation on ethical use and appropriate application of GenAI in a university setting. This workshop will be offered again in Semester 2 and the schedule will be listed on the Library workshops web page.

Read about some of the pros and cons of using GenAI tools, and watch a video featuring ECU Lecturer Dr Ross Yates commenting on some appropriate and inappropriate uses of the tools.

  • Referencing Library Guide

Find examples for how to acknowledge the use of GenAI in your ECU assignments. This is just as important as any other required referencing.

Academic support from a Librarian or Learning Adviser by way of scheduled drop-in sessions is available, as well as one-to-one Librarian appointments (available on request).
