An open textbook developed by a team of Edith Cowan University researchers has been awarded a 2025–26 CAUL OER Collective Grant, one of only seven projects selected nationwide in a highly competitive round.

Midwifery Solidarity and Feminism will explore the philosophical and ethical foundations of midwifery through a feminist lens. It will examine models of care, new parenting, workforce challenges, and power dynamics in health care, while advocating for equity and empowerment in the maternity system.

The text brings together the expertise of Dr Kate Buchanan, Prof Jyai Allen, Dr Di Bloxsome, Dr Mitra Javanmard, Emma Ritchie, Dr Sarah Hay, Krystyl Toneycliffe, Prof Sara Morris, and Prof Sara Bayes—all from ECU.

The project was funded under the Leap category of the CAUL OER Collective Grants, which supports the creation of new open textbooks that enrich learning and improve access across the tertiary sector.

The ECU authors will be working in collaboration with the Library to develop the open resource.

The final resource will be freely available and published through the CAUL Open Educational Resources Collective, ECU repository and worldwide OER databases in order to make this essential text freely accessible.

Congratulations to all involved on this important contribution to open education.

About the OER Collective

In 2023, ECU proudly joined the Council of Australasian University Librarians’ (CAUL) Open Educational Resources (OER) Collective. This initiative is designed to advance the OER agenda at a national level, fostering collaboration and innovation in educational resources.

The OER Collective supports both independent and collaborative publishing, builds infrastructure and community, and strengthens capacity across the higher education sector to engage meaningfully with open education.
