Monday, 20 October 2025

Tags:

Open Access Week is a global, annual event that promotes free and open access to research and scholarship. It aims to bring awareness to how knowledge is shared and to spark conversations and action about open publishing, open data, and equitable access.

This year’s theme, “Who Owns Our Knowledge?”, encourages discussion about ownership and control of research, particularly in an age of commercial platforms and artificial intelligence. Learn more about the theme at openaccessweek.org.

What’s On?

Visit your ECU campus library during Open Access Week to see a digital display introducing the global movement for open access.

You can also take part in free webinars hosted by Open Access Australasia, featuring international speakers exploring the politics of knowledge, ownership, and accessibility.

Open Access at ECU

ECU Library supports a range of open access initiatives:

  • Read and Publish agreements enable ECU researchers to publish open access with selected publishers at no cost.
  • Research Online is Edith Cowan University's official open access repository. It highlights and promotes access to the scholarship and research outputs created by staff and post graduate students at Edith Cowan University.
  • CAUL OER Collective - In 2023, ECU proudly joined the Council of Australasian University Librarians’ (CAUL) Open Educational Resources (OER) Collective. This initiative is designed to advance the OER agenda at a national level, fostering collaboration and innovation in educational resources.

Earlier this year, an open textbook developed by a team of Edith Cowan University researchers was awarded a 2025–26 CAUL OER Collective Grant, one of only seven projects selected nationwide in a highly competitive round. Read the article featured in the ECU Newsroom.
