Project title:

  • An evaluation of an English for academic purposes (EAP) program in a Vietnamese university

Supervisors:

  • Dr Bill Allen
  • Dr Maggie McAlinden

Summary of thesis:

English pathway programs are organised in Vietnamese universities to prepare students for university programs that are taught in English. However, the effectiveness of such programs is under-investigated. This study evaluated one of English programs, to investigate how effectively it met students’ learning needs. Analyses of documents, interviews with different participants showed that the program met students’ two needs for English proficiency and academic study skills; but failed to meet students’ needs for passing all examinations and being ready for the university program. The study extends local and international understanding of English pathway programs in Vietnam and similar contexts.
