Project title:

  • Perceived barriers to effective mainstream inclusion by educators and parents: A comparative mixed methods study

Supervisors:

  • Dr Gill Kirk
  • Dr Trish Collins
  • Dr John O'Rourke

Summary of thesis:

Inclusion is a word that has been passed around through the disability sector with varying levels of understanding and implementation. The Salamanca Statement and Framework for action on Special Needs Education (UNESCO, 1994) refers to the need for ‘Education for All’ and highlights that the most effective way to educate students with disabilities, is through mainstream ‘regular’ schools, with an inclusive orientation. By identifying gaps in the research, such as the lack of consultation with students with a disability, the relevance of the proposed study will be established.
