Project title:

  • A critique of the Vietnamese Bachelor of Business English

Supervisors:

  • Dr Christine Cunningham
  • Dr Annamaria Paolino

Summary of thesis:

This PhD thesis offers a critique of the Vietnamese Bachelor of Business English (BBE). The reason for the study is that very little empirical research had been conducted about this unique Vietnamese English degree. The main results of this two-stage, interpretivist study is the discovery that multinational employers do want to hire Vietnamese BBE graduates, but they are somewhat dissatisfied with graduates’ English language skills and their rudimentary knowledge of business. The main implication of the research for Vietnam’s industries and its tertiary sector is that curriculum reform is needed to better meet and exceed graduates’ potential and employers’ expectations.
