Summary of thesis:

Western Australia has been identified as having the highest over-representation of First Nation peoples incarcerated, in proportion to overall population in each state and territory. Literacy levels have been directly linked to high levels of First Nation peoples' imprisonment. The purpose of the research is to investigate how literacy levels impact on the contact that Western Australian First Nation peoples have with the criminal justice system (CJS). Furthermore, the purpose is to elevate the voice of First Nation peoples who have contact with the CJS, as their voice is missing from the literature. The perspectives of Western Australian First Nation peoples, criminal solicitors who represent them and other workers such as field and court officers, will be sought.
