Project title:

  • Why parents are using an innovative approach to educate their teenage children with autism:  A social justice mixed methods exploratory design

Supervisors:

  • Dr John O'Rourke
  • Associate Professor Lorraine Hammond

Summary of thesis:

Parents using an innovative approach to educate their children with autism are criticised for falling victims of pseudoscience and for denying their children access to scientifically supported interventions. Framed by social justice, in-depth interviews have been conducted to explore the factors which led parents to this decision. Preliminary results reveal parents’ privilege their autonomy to choose interventions that they report improve their children’s quality of life, in spite of a paucity of empirical research.
