Project title:

  • A grounded theory study on how Vietnamese higher education teachers of English as a foreign language construct their professional identities

Supervisors:

  • Dr Bill Allen
  • Dr Donna Barwood

Summary of thesis:

This study examined how Vietnamese higher education (HE) teachers of English as a foreign language (EFL) constructed their professional identities. A theoretical sample of 16 EFL lecturers were interviewed, and data analysed, across four iterative cycles. The central outcome was that these teachers see themselves as conflicted, glocalised, Vietnamese HE teachers of EFL. The outcomes have significance for lecturers and managers in non-native English-speaking countries in responding to increasing glocalised university systems.
