Project title:

  • Exploring teachers’ use of physical activity in Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE) senior secondary physical education

Supervisors:

  • Professor Dawn Penney
  • Dr Andy Brown
  • Dr Rachael Whittle

Summary of thesis:

The Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE) Physical Education (PE) curriculum, like similar studies nationally and internationally, challenges teachers to integrate theoretical and practical dimensions of PE. This research examined teaching and learning occurring 'in', 'through' and 'about' movement, with a unique focus looking at the presence of gender discourse within this process. A case study involving three independent schools found that the process of integration was important to VCE PE teachers. Achieving integration was shown to be complex and influenced, directly or indirectly by gender discourses. Findings highlight a need for professional learning, policy review and further research.
