CAUL Pauses Elsevier Negotiations for 2026

Tuesday, 25 November 2025

The Council of Australasian University Librarians (CAUL) has announced a pause in its negotiations with Elsevier for ScienceDirect journal content in 2026. The parties were unable to reach an agreement on major commercial terms, including pricing, agreement structure and the inclusion of gold open access publishing.

CAUL has confirmed its intention to re-engage with Elsevier when a sustainable and transparent pricing framework can be reached.

What this means for ECU

ECU Library is reviewing potential impacts on teaching, research and publishing activities. At this stage, no immediate changes affect access.

The Library will provide timely updates should the sector’s position shift or if alternative access options are required.
